Strings and Tuning
I am buying an oud from Mr. Yildirim (turkishouds.com), and I wanted to know what are the best strings to use on it, and if I can tune it to an arabic
tuning.

You can tune Arabic, no problem.
Arabic oud you can not tune Turkish way (well, not recomended...)
About the strings, let them (Yildirim) recomend something.

Very stupid question, but what is the "action", and the "risha"? Also, is there a good beginner oud book to try?

There is no stupid question! We all asked this question at first..
Risha is the pick you hold in your hand to pluck the strings. Do some search and you will find a lot of different types, shapes, material,
stiffness...
The action is how far the strings are from the fingerboard. If they are too far (i.e. the action is HIGH) they will be hard to play, and if they are
too close (i.e. the action is LOW) they may rattle against the fingerboard and buzz.
As for beginner books.. you may find many posts on the subject in this forum.. just search for them. You may also want to try Marina's book..

You can string your oud with any tuning system (arab or turkish) you wish - it all depends on the string tension which must never be to high (danger
for the oud).
Whether the oud then sounds good with the chosen tuning is another issue: turkish ouds are shorter and made for the higher tuning; so arab strings
might be a bit on the too loose side - dependig on how the oud reacts to the tuning. Arab ouds are made for lower tuning and might not sound good with
the higher turkish tuning.
As long as you do not put your instrument under too big of a tension you can experiment and find the tuning the oud sounds best.

BTW. Daniel Mari makes very nice strings for arab and for turkish ouds that are very well worth their price - look in the forum to learn more about
that, or google Bill Ostries web site.
