Floating Bridge Oud in Germany! Please help

Beshar Hussam AL Azzawi - 2-9-2012 at 05:23 AM

Hi guys,
I am looking for a decent floating bridge Oud in Germany, but it seemed that finding a good Oud here is not that easy. Funny though I grew up in Baghdad, went to Baghdad College High School where Muhammed Fadhel's shop was only 1 mile away!!! But never bothered to even consider the instrument back then... Played as a guitarist together with Omar Bashir on more than one occasion, and now 'stuck' here desperately trying to find something good in europe.

I am a guitarist and more into flamenco with iraqi flavor, however i am hooked up on Oud lately and looking forward to find a good one here around 1000$.
I fully appreciate your help guys, and thank you in advance for your support.

Peace, joy, music,
Beshar

As soon as I will come back to France, I will put my Fadi Matta floater for sale.

Hi Beshar,:wavey:

there is one on ebay that does not look too bad.
Maybe you are near enough to Nürnberg to try it.

Ohh! Marcus, I spent months checking Ebay without any luck, this one looks great but the "buy now" price is a bit over my current budget. Is it your Oud? I live in Berlin:)
Thanks you for posting this

Marcus - 2-10-2012 at 01:35 AM

Hi Beshar,
no, it`s not mine. I`m a fixed bridge ouds enthusiast.:D

Did you see the other oud from the same seller?

I have seen both ouds, well the first one has a crack i understood right? And on the back side it is written in Arabic "Omar AL Abdallat" the name of a Jordanian folk singer!!! It made me wonder where did that Oud come from!?
As for the second Oud it is as well written in Arabic:
"Excelent Iraqi Oud"
"Mohammad Fadhel Al Hussain and Sons"
"Baghdad-Karrada"

Not to be confused with the real Mohammad Fadhel and Sons where he had his shop in Baghdad-Adhamiyya! So I am a b it skeptical... What do You make of all this Marcus? Although the prices are tempting :D

Marcus - 2-10-2012 at 06:21 AM

Hi Beshar,:wavey:
hmmm, kinda strange to write"excelent Iraki oud"on the label:shrug:

Shurely its not a Mohamad Fadel, but as far as I know his son(s) run the business now.

Better we post the link here and let one of the oudies in the forum with more knowledge about it judge the oud.
Fake or not?

Best regards,

Marcus

I can ensure you that it is not the Mohammad Fadhel that we know! It is already written in Arabic but it seems very deceiving!! Ohh and by the way the paper written in Arabic is fake!!!! The area is called Karrada and not Karradla as written!!! wow

Marhaba Beshar,

By narrowing the search in one category "floating Bridge" you just make it much easer to help you..

within this price range I would check:

1. Ahmed Abdul Jalil from Kuwait, his floating bridge ouds are just unbelievable. In Arabic we have a phrase ''السهل الممتنع " which is something like apparent ease or inimitable simplicity it the translation is right. Ahmed instruments are new breed I think, it's like an Iraqi oud in affair with Turkish one :D

ex: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2imJWVu9KI&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMI_cbgrnXc&feature=related

2. Hussain Sabsaby from Syria.. "Continuity" is the name of the game for this luthier! no matter if it's his first production oud or number 1000. the same clear & crisp sound is guaranteed.

ex: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oi7vHG16qy4&feature=plcp&con...

3. Azad Omar, Iraqi who lives in Netherlands .. I wont talk to much about this guy instrument, just close your eyes my fellow-citizen and listing to the melodies of Abu Nawas St. and Al-Nahar road at lazy afternoon. Unfortunately he is not very focus on oud making business, it seams like hobby for him.

ex: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2ZKx5NDfKM
......

Last time I checked Oud's shipping fee from Iraq was $600 with no safety guaranteed. :(

Wish you all the luck

Azizi,
that was the best!! After the search I have done, I found out that some people had horror stories about Azad's ouds, some documented in this forum actually! The same guy who bought that Oud wanted to sell me his unplayable oud via private message... Well I gave myself some time to research and found that out!
A couple of dags ago, I have reached Hussain and talked to him over the phone! I believe this guy knows what he is doing, loved this crispy tone, and that would fit perfectly into my NuName style, I would call his Ouds 'Flamenco Ouds' plus the guy is a good artist and Oud player himself...
Thanks again, and I really appreciate it.
I will post an update soon,

BTW; Ahmad's Oud looks more like Faozi Monshid's Ouds, check the pick guard!!! Do you have any clue to how we could reach Ahmed?

Beshar

8MCHE - 2-13-2012 at 11:53 AM

Glad that you found this helpful .. The bat shape pick guard is indeed Monshid's trademark, but the Oud above has nothing to do with Mr.Monshid work. Unfortunately, I believe this is a price he has to pay for choosing to produce in wide variety of styles and not to stick to one personal "identification' shape. to make my point clearer please check the link below and tell what do you think?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&v=uo0Fwo6YGHA&am...

Ahmed Abdul Jalil Mobile: +965 66634066 .. Email addresses: vwxyz70@hotmail.com / vwxyz8080@hotmail.com
....

Hussain Sabsaby Ouds are great choice, however they are not everyone cup of tea!! due to their '' metal-ly" sharp sound feel or maybe it's just me being over sensitive

keep us updated please

Omar Al-Mufti - 3-15-2012 at 02:54 AM

Hi Beshar,
This is Omar, A friend of Muhannad and Mustafa Faeq. I also used to be in Baghdad college. I'm an oud player and might be able to help you.

Beshar Hussam AL Azzawi - 3-15-2012 at 02:58 AM

Thanks Omar,
great to hear from you here and thanks for your offer. However, I ordered my Oud and it should be here soon. I will post pics and details within the coming 14 days or so :)

cheers to you and Baghdad College

Omar Al-Mufti - 3-15-2012 at 04:30 AM

Since it was my first post in the forum, they had to take a look at it. Therefore it is late. I checked that you've orderd a syrian oud. That's what I wanted to advise you. I have spent money and time and concluded the "den finger weg von Irakischen Instrumenten". The time when Iraqi ouds were the best is gone when Muhammad Fadhil passed away. You still can see some beautiful instruments but no sound and geometry quality. Syrians, Lebanese and one luthier from Morocco have started putting standards for oud production. Their instruments look alike and sound almost the same (which I like). You wont witness deformation after a while and you will be happy with the quality.
The one you chose, Sabsabi I guess, is not the one I would recommend. However he is not bad since your style is a bit modern. I'm into classical ouds (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZUA6WNRV1k), but I have just ordered a floating bridge oud for the collection.
Hope you will enjoy your oud and waiting for your results.

Thanks, and yes indeed I like Sabsaby's work, as for the tone we will see :)

I have reached the same conclusion or in a way led by my intuition there! I want a floating bridge standards, and the Iraqi part is in the music that is composed, or played and of course the musician, where I have no issues with whatsoever.
I like your playing, all the best of luck

I am still waiting for the Oud to arrive!

Omar Al-Mufti - 3-15-2012 at 05:59 AM

His work is so fine and the finishing is great. He claims (and has some plans and working papers) that he has the Munir Bashir design and late Bashir himself discussed it with him.
Glad that you liked my playing. Waiting to hear yours.
Salute

Beshar Hussam AL Azzawi - 3-21-2012 at 10:02 AM

Ok guys,
I got the Oud safe and sound! It sounds, and smells like heaven!
Thanks to Huosain Sabsaby, he was great all the way through the process of building and delivering this masterpiece.
I will post a preview and maybe sound sample soon.

Cheers,
Beshar
