FLOATING BRIDGE OUD PREPARATION

farukturunz - 7-10-2012 at 03:22 AM

Hi All !

I've just finished the roughly processing of a new mold.

I'll use this mold for constructing the new model: FLOATING BRIDGE OUD.

Dear Faruk,

I sometimes wonder if you ever sleep ;)

Another exciting development from the house of Türünz.

Warm regards,

Greg

Dear Greg,

I should have long brought out this model in pursuance of people's ongoing demand.

This project seems to occupy my workshop for a good period since we are planning to organize the whole production process of this model in a new concept:COMPLETELY COMPUTERIZED.

Firstly, the mold which is shown by the picture is a model. I am going to have half of this model (either the right part or the left) scanned and have that data mirrored. Then I will get the real mold made on a CNC router. In this way both sides of the mold will be symmetrical. For the soundboard analyzes on ANSYS I need a true geometry.

Secondly, I will design the soundboard and its braces using ANSYS program.

Warm regards,
Faruk

Onward ho, dear Faruk!

Thank you dear oudistcamp...

I hope the first one will sound within 3 months :)

Faruk,

I understand that the model of the mold will be scanned and the final mold will be made with the CNC router.
The CNC router is excellent for making repetitive items accurately and cost effectively.

So, what I am interested to know - are you planning to make multiple molds for the same oud which are very slightly varied, so that you can minutely customize a clients request?

Will the ribs be laser cut as well, based on the 3-D readings of the mold?

Oudistcamp,

Your understanding is of a highly wide perspective...and source of inspiration. Who knows? Maybe one day the oud world widens enough and need for mass production arises, then producing the oud with high-tech comes to order.

My aim is rather related to a childish enthusiasm. My deceased father sometimes used to say to me, whenever I tie up something exceedingly, " Faruk, you have an inessential curiosity to know the essence of everything. World is consisting of things without end... No one has ever accomplished to know everything in that respect!"

It is sad that life drives you to a narrow path where you have no luxury to slum in those districts anymore!
Thankfully my occupation which was my childhood fancy is full of somehow "mysterious" unknowns.
Anyway it was time to follow my father's advise and concentrate on less issue!!! Concentrating on those "unknowns" I came up with the truth that luthiery has a magic scope that takes you to the field of discoveries and innovations, thank goodness...

Recently you have advised me to write a book covering my experiences and experiments on oud craftsmanship. You are right. In order to make it easy for the future readers to fall out of some miss perceptions about the oud making "secrets"; I will show how an oud "works". Such a book must contain many items pertaining to sight, many elucidative graphics, pictures and an effectual CD-ROM. I will show how to design an oud's visible body on the computer. This may not be an unaccomplished renewal, I know, but behavior of an oud's soundboard hasn't been shown so far for all I know.

This project will cover ANSYS analyzes necessarily. Although I made the analyze of one of my soundboards and laid it before the respected followers of these forums; I have an intention to use the ANSYS program as the main instructive material of my book. So I will kill two birds with one stone: I will have an extremely flawless oud mold to make our Floating Bridge Ouds and also a fine digital data taken out of that for the ANSYS probes.

As you see childhood never ends up if you wish:)

What a delightful story, Faruk! :applause:
May your childish enthusiasm illuminate your path always!!

Perhaps we will have the pleasure of meeting a semi-completed floating bridge oud, soon? ;)

Thank you oudistcamp :applause:
I decided to use the model mold for the construction of some pilot products after having it scanned...For now I need to finish the apparatus to cut the oval sound holes neatly...:)

That's a really great project, I'm really looking forward to hear it.
Will you propose an iraki type of bracing on this model ?

All my wishes of good luck.

Hi suz_i_dil !

Thank you for your interest :)
Sure! I will design the soundboards of this model according
to the Iraqi type bracing rules.

Regards...

Dear Ustaz Faruk,

Thank you, we are all looking forward to seeing and hearing this new member of the Faruk Turunz oud family!
Will it be designed solely for high F-tuning, or other as well?

And yes please, the book sounds like a great idea. This work, at the intersection of art, fine craftsmanship and high-tech engineering/technology is fascinating.

All the best!

Ahmed

My dear friend Ahmed,
Thank you for your nice comment. For now I am designing the Floating Bridge Ouds for solely high F-tuning.

All the best

This idea sounds good oudistcamp:) . I have contemplated your question, although at first it seemed to me as a project which might come to my agenda some time later,
I admit that it is a brilliant idea. Yes, I am thinking of making multiple molds for the same model which are very slightly varied, so that I can minutely customize a clients request?

I am greatful, thank you:applause:

suz_i_dil - 7-19-2012 at 10:05 AM

Anothe point, do you think a tuning a C would be possible with an iraki bracing ?
I mean tuning the braces, without changing the distances between the braces.

All the best

That is great news, dear Faruk!
The possibilities are endless with CNC.....
