abdelwahab and the oud

Man thats an awesome oud. Does anyone else think the MOP on the soundboard is overkill?

MatthewW - 1-11-2008 at 02:49 PM

Revaldo- I think maybe the MOP on the soundboard might be considered a bit overkill on a lesser player's oud but in M Abdel Wahab's hands it looks just right. :) It's all down to personal taste.
It's a beautiful instrument, I'd love to have one just like it, and thanks for posting it sa2a, nice to see ouds like this from time to time in the forum.

It is beautiful to look at AND the MOP is indeed overkill!

I would imagine that cheap touristy ouds have destroyed the reputation of MOP ouds. I'm sure when you coff up big bucks for a MOP oud you're going to get something decent. The sound I believe, really is in the craftsmanship of the soundboard, the bowl has a role of course. But take a look at my Khalifeh oud for example, I picked it up for $150 at a milkbar! It was professionally converted into a floating bridge oud, and the sound just keeps on getting better.

I dont get the idea... how are people finding anything wrong with this oud.

Overkill or not its the oud that belonged to one of the greatest masters and probably all of us combined and working for 100 years wouldn't reach anything compared to what this man has achieved. Especially with this oud as he used it to compose his pieces.

Folks let's not adopt the carpet bombing school of distinction, as we judge all inlaid ouds. One of the best ouds I know is Farid's fully inlaid masterpiece.(1st link below) Along with it, AbdelWahab's oud above is enough proof that inlaying an instrument does not directly lead to bad sound. I think it's down to the mastery of the oud maker. Here's a video -2nd link below- of AbdelWahab taking a few light plucks on his oud...judge the power and warmth of the sound for yourself. Another point I want to make is that modern makers can also turn out good sounding, fully inlaid ouds. On the 3rd link below, you'll find a video of Abadi's latest Shehata oud, which has an elaborately inlaid rosewood back, yet still manages to sound great.

Sidi- I agree, there will always be a magical quality about a well made and intricately inlaid MOP oud.

zalzal - 1-12-2008 at 05:29 AM

Here is a clear link between lost great Al andalus and contemporary eastern arab: The art of "taracea" which started in Granada about XiVth century - still produced in some workwshops near the Alhambra - and Syrian ترصيع inlaid.
May be this art was brought to eastern mediterranean centuries ago by highly civilized andalousian people flying away northern uncivilized barbarians.

The tie of MAW in the photo of LP posted above is very stylish and match perfectly with the oud. Very elegant.

Thank you for this visual extase you are sharing here.

This is another post with a video , i think Akram, playing a nicely "taracea" oud repaired by Maurice Shehata which sounds very warm and nice.

wow that oud made for ABadi is sounding killer.

ilnokaly - 9-5-2010 at 01:18 PM

hi guys ,, does anyone knowa who is the maker of this oud ??

Nits

spyrosc - 9-5-2010 at 03:56 PM

I don't want to pick any nits but the oud in the first picture IS NOT the same as the one Abd El Wahab is playing.

It is SIMILAR, but not the same.

I think the MOP in the back has little effect on the sound. I have a killer MOP made by Anwar Koubeh and it sounds great.

Spyros C.

SamirCanada - 9-5-2010 at 04:32 PM

I beleive this was made by Sumbat der bedrossian. Same style of inlays and rosette.

Anwar el Kubeh ouds are awsome.

Sypros, do you still have the one I sold you?

ilnokaly - 9-5-2010 at 05:10 PM

no no spyrosc it is the same oud .. but what makes the colour different is the level of the light (in the first foto the light was more than in the second ) thats why in the second foto the oud seems to be darker ..
i think ..

SamirCanada - 9-6-2010 at 05:47 AM

Oud in the first picture is not the same as the abdelwahab oud, similar type of oud but the inlays are not an exact match though.
there are a few makers in syria who have these types of ouds over the years.

Danielo - 9-6-2010 at 06:30 AM

Hi,

it reminds me my first oud.. made by Khalifeh the father in 1986.

It was not bad at all :) (but not very powerful)

It's not the same oud, the inlay is a slightly different pattern.
