Reda Aouad - 5-25-2009 at 09:57 PM

I want to share the following photos of my new Nazih Ghadban oud, which is not yet ready. The bowl is made of walnut with maple stripes. It is not finished yet, only wet with water to show the wood's color and lines. Once Nazih sends me more pictures, I'll update this thread.

Edit
- Bowl wood: 18 years old Lebanese walnut / maple stripes
- Neck wood: Same walnut and maple stripes
- Bowl dimensions: 50.5 x 37 x 19 cm
- String length: 60 cm
- Soundboard wood: Master grade Caucasian spruce
- 7 courses for the Arabic tuning DO FA LA RE sol do fa

Edit2
- Width of the fingerboard: 4.1cm at the nut, 5.9cm at the neck-bowl joint

cool large bowl :) should have stunning sound
When you will receive it?

Reda Aouad - 5-28-2009 at 06:20 AM

I will be in Lebanon by the end of July and will receive it by then. Very long time to wait yet!

katakofka - 5-28-2009 at 06:21 AM

4.2 cm at the nut not at the bowl joint right?

Reda Aouad - 5-28-2009 at 06:22 AM

Sure!

katakofka - 5-28-2009 at 06:23 AM

and at the bowl joint? 7cm?

Reda Aouad - 5-28-2009 at 06:28 AM

Hehehe.. no man.. I don't know yet, but definitely not 7cm! I just asked for the width at the nut to be a bit more than 4cm to have a good spacing for better playability (I have long fingers, no problem). My current 6-course oud is ~3.8-3.9 mm wide at the nut so the extra space I asked for is good to accommodate for one more course. And yes I asked for a relatively large bowl and one sound hole to accentuate the deep bass tones.

katakofka - 5-28-2009 at 06:30 AM

samir azaar in syria makes it 7cm at the joint with the bowl and 4.2cm at the nut. I wanted to know if samir is copying from Nazih:D

Reda Aouad - 5-28-2009 at 06:31 AM

I remember Nazih told me something near 5.8cm.. but not more that 6cm for sure. I will ask him to get the exact measurements.

UPDATES!

The pictures speak for themselves!

OudandTabla - 5-31-2009 at 12:11 PM

Wow!!! This oud is fantastic. The look is very refined. Understated and beautifully done. I Like the rosette too- what a treat for the eyes. Congrats!

Microber - 6-5-2009 at 12:46 AM

As you say Reda : the pictures speak for themselves.

I am speechless...
Your oud comes immediately in my top 5 of the most beautiful ouds.

Mabrouk the Oud Reda, it is a treasure, and I am sure that with time it will be better, because it is made with the best wood...
with 7 strigns, I would be lost... I heard that Nasser Shamma had a oud with 8 string..
Mabrouk again.

arsene - 8-27-2009 at 03:52 PM

I cannot stop saying everytime I see one, how much I love single hole ouds.... and this one is a particular gorgeous example!

Reda Aouad - 8-27-2009 at 10:45 PM

Thank you all for your nice comments. I received the oud this week, and indeed it is one of the most beautiful ouds I've ever seen. And here is a recent recording: http://www.mikeouds.com/messageboard/viewthread.php?tid=9624

suz_i_dil - 8-27-2009 at 10:48 PM

Indeed you're right mrkmni.
What I heard about this 8 strings oud is that he develop it from an old description in a manuscript.
But it seems it was an horror to play on it...as you say, getting lost. Too difficult to play so the project didn't went ahead.

And by the way...this oud is really gorgeous, alf mabrouk!

Reda Aouad - 8-27-2009 at 10:53 PM

"He has constructed an eight-string oud following the manuscript of the 9th century music theorist al-Farabi. This new design (8 instead of 6 strings) expanded the musical range of the oud and gave it a distinct tonality."

I've also seen him on youtube play an 8-string oud, but I cannot find the link at the moment. If I find it again I'll post it.

Reda Aouad - 8-27-2009 at 10:58 PM

This is the so-called manuscript..
http://www.naseershamma.com/farabi.html

katakofka - 8-27-2009 at 11:01 PM

Farabi :D ooh yeh
samir 3azar in syria is doing on regular bases 8 strings oud. I was planning getting one from him but I went with Matta for a 7 strings.
Actually the 8 strings that samir does can be tuned as Do-fa-la-re-sol-do-fa-sibemol. One can do e.g Re-La-Re-sol-do-fa-sib on a 7 strings and reaches similar octaves to an 8 strings.
yalla ..do it reda on your new oud:cool:

I have heard that this manuscript is a fake one not related to Farabi but more recent

mrkmni - 8-28-2009 at 05:20 PM

Reda, I have a recording of a playing of -Touta- by Simone Shahine; I am sure that he has the same oud as yours..
Congratulation again, I ll try to buy one similar later on, but with 6 strings for sure.

Brian Prunka - 8-28-2009 at 06:46 PM

Simon plays a Nahat from the 1920's, not a Ghadban.

MatthewW - 8-29-2009 at 01:06 AM

Congratulations Reda, may your new oud by Nazih bring you much happiness and beautiful music- regards, MW

Brian Prunka - 8-29-2009 at 01:27 PM
