My new Gamil Georges Oud---any comments ???

Hi All

This is the Oud that I bought in the summer of 2006. I couldn't bring it to the US at that time, but had the chance during the recent Christmas holidays.

Its a Gamil Georges Oud. His son - who is in his eighties- still owns the store (as of July 2006), but as I was told by the sales reps that he now outsources Oud parts from around the country and assembles them in his store in Mohamed Ali Street.

I was also told that the fingerboard is mahogany and the body Palisander and Beech. The Soundboard is "mosky" wood which I think is some form of European Spruce. The pegs are not ebony however, but white wood painted black.

I will post a few pics here and tell me what you think.
I would also like to thank everybody on the board who helped me with my relentless questions :applause:

Thanks Matthew

I tried to see the son, but they told me he only pops up at the store on Mondays ....or was it Tuesdays, I can't remember. Actually this is my first oud, so posting a sound clip at this time is kind of difficult, I'm just adjusting to the lack of frets and the shorter neck, but it will come sometime...hopefully :)).

Thanks again

Hisham

Congrats Hisham. That looks like one of the nicer ones that you can get from that shop nowadays. If one is lucky enough to actually go to Egypt, and then visit this historical shop, you can find a nice oud there no doubt. I think you did just that. Good job.

Thanks Mike !

A friend of mine picked it out of at least 10 - 15 Ouds, some were nicer in looks, and I would have definitely preferred a smaller bowl made with more popular woods but i guess I liked this ouds mellow/sad character. It actually meshes well with my neys.

For a start I guess its a good choice, but I still have my eyes on a a custom Maurice Shehata, probably in a year or so, depending on how I progress.

Thanks again
Hisham

Is the gamil georges shop still there?
Would a relative beginner be able to go there and find a nice sounding oud.

I am mesmerised by this oud here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqCFacwPM38

hello londonoudi,

yes the shop is still there, I visited it last may. I showed them my pictures of the 1920 GAmil Georgy oud I own and which I will restore next year.
see here: http://lutes-strings.de/Aoud_egypt_1920.php
but they where not interested.

About your oud nayoud, the wood for the bowl is never beech, I suppose it is ash but by theese pictures I cannot be totally shure.

Best regards

Matthias
