Mood: beginner's frustration ...

[*] posted on 4-27-2009 at 05:07 AM

With all the wishes for sucess, do note that ..

1. Try to minimize the nonsense and salesmanship in the descriptions on the website.
2. "The oud is a highly ornate ... " Google it, and you'll know what I mean.
3. Your name is not Arab Instrument. You have a name, and this is mostly a forum of people. And people mostly like to deal with people. (There are exceptions, but that's a story for another day ... :-)

Welcome aboard, and good luck!

Hi,

congratulations for your new shop and good luck !

I have one request for you: please remove these horrible children ouds from your shop :(

If some well-intentioned parents buy this for their children they can be dishearten forever from playing music...

I hope to teach oud to my older boy in few years, it would be great to have descent smaller oud available more easily. Children really desserve good instruments :)

I find it extremely rude when people start telling other people how to run their business, what to sell, or what "nonsense" they use to describe their products.

And who cares what your username is anyway?

geez...take a chill pill people.

Hi Assaf :wavey:

The ouds look very nice. But for me it is much more important which wood is used in the diferent parts of the oud.
And the most important thing for me is what the sound is like!!!!
Can you add soundfiles and a bit more info about the material??

btw, I agree with Maher.

Marcus

Playing the oud is like feeding my soul with peace

Sorry Assaf I did not want to offend anybody...
I did not comment on the real ouds (indeed some of your instruments seems quite nice :) ) but about the 'toy' ouds.... being recently a father I am rather sensitive to these issues ;)

Well Dan
I am going to add many ouds to this store. Some of them will be for small kids but professionals and less for decoration.

Thanks my friend :wavey:

Hey Assaf,

Good luck with the store... It looks like you've good a decent selection of beginner ouds for sale.

One thought... You may want to set up an online store on Ebay as well. I think it would give good exposure to your business.... Also, I know that I had some real reservations about buying from overseas... but in buying from Ebay I get some protection as the customer and I can look at the merchants feedback as well.

Also, in the descriptions, it would be good to be able to see some basics... for example....
Bowl - Walnut
Top - Spruce
Fingerboard - Ebony
Stringlength - 60cm

Just a thought. Also, there are a ton of folks out there who put up descriptions of the oud on their website... but really, if someone is going to spend $300 on an instrument, then I doubt the sellers website is where they're looking to learn about the oud... From a consumer perspective, the added descriptions don't help me.

Perhaps, I came off the wrong way.

But taking descriptions off other site is an act of plagiarism. And I do not see that pointing this out to be rude.

And, having been on the forum for some time, I've seen my share of a wide spectrum of traders who are in it for the money and not the music. Yes, MOF justifiably distances itself from being responsible for financial transaction and, yes, it's unfortunately the buyer's responsibility to be careful. But based on first impression, the given website was not comforting.

I have nothing personal against Mr. Assaf or any other trader for that matter. And, as I began my first post, I sincerely and full heartedly wish him all the luck. In fact, I'm excited for another option in facilitating bringing ouds to North America. It's good for the oud, for the music, for the players, for the markte - mostly a win, win. But there is absolutely no need for a website that misrepsents the the trader and make him look like a hustler.

And all it takes is a bit more effort, a bit more care, a bit more heart so that something more than making profit shines through - an honest intention to serve the buyers, help them out. If you've ever been to a guitar shop or any music store, most of the times you don't deal with the owner as a seller; rather, someone who's genuinely interested that you learn, some times even you don't make profit. (And I said with more than a reasonable understanding of the economies of running stores for musical instruments.)

And considering that those interested in gettings ouds are readily frustrated because they're excited to learn and get their hands on one of those ouds, but that instrument they want is somthing that they cannot see, touch, hold, size or try. They're worried about what they don't see or hear in the photos and the mp3s. They're worried about what would happen if the instrument is not packed well, or if the parcel company messes up the oud on the way. And they're managing this for an instrument that they have enough interest to try, but are not sure that they can handle its demands for a month or a year.

For all this, and much more, you don't want someone coming out saying ... "Psst. Want oud?", regardless of any good intentions.

Dear friend:shrug:
You came off the wrong way!
If i took any descriptions from other site i did it with a permission.
This specific forum give people the opportunity to buy and sell ouds and i don't think i did any crime by sharing my ouds in the store to all those players.
I know that when my friend looked for an oud he didn't find a store that selling variety of ouds and i thought it will be good idea to open a web which will present some ouds and also information about Arab instrument.
I am getting lots of support feedback's from people but there will always be a person who will "spoil the party".

Thanks for your feedback anyway.

About soundfiles, I would like the hear the Gawharet el Fan presented above on the third of june.
