What kind of oud is this?
I'm a guitar player and want to get a larger oud. I like this one in the video below, but I am not familiar with the differences between the different
types of ouds from the different countries. Can anyone tell me what kind this one is?

Looks similar in size to a lot of Sukar and Shehata ouds. I think most Arabic style ouds will be around that same size. I'm not sure on the
particular maker of that oud though

Thank you Jason! So I'm guessing what you told me is the general "type" of oud it is? An analogy would be if I showed you an automobile and you told
me it was a mid-sized SUV. Is this correct? I'm just trying to understand the differences. I like the one in the video because of it's low, deep tone
and I want to make sure I get the same kind.

Yep exactly. A fixed bridge Arabic style oud will give you a nice low and deep sound.
Now just to pick a maker

Wow, that would be great to get one by the same maker. But I might just have to settle for a fixed bridge Arabic style oud. I saw an oud in my local
music store. How can I tell if it's Arabic or not? Needless to say, it's the only one they have so I cannot compare it to anything. It looks like this
one:
http://www.nileshop.net/store/nileshop_viewItem.asp?idProduct=1029
and they are asking 650 USD for it. It is "new" but you can tell it has been displayed a while as the unfinished spruce top is a little dirty. Anyway
to judge the quality?

put a picture of it up here for advice. Looks can be deceiving when shopping for a oud especialy when you dont know what to look for. Go to the store
and ask to see the label inside the oud. maybe he will already know the name of the maker of the instrument.
then share it here for a second opinion.

I will do it. Thanks for the advice Samir. I tried to look in the oud, but I needed a little flashlight to see if there was a label.

Here is a picture of the oud. I can post larger pics if needed. There was no label from a maker inside the oud. Any thoughts?

That appears to be a Turkish oud. The rosettes are consistent with a lot of cheaper ouds from Turkey. I wouldn't pay $650 for an oud with no label
inside. For that kind of money you could get a Shehata or top model Sukar, both of which would get you the sound you're looking for.

Hi sunshy,
I agree with Jason, it seems to be one of those mass produced Turkish ouds I saw one of them recently with no lable and its sound is not that of good
quality Turkish ouds.
I think as Jason suggests for $650 I am sure you can buy a good quality Turkish or Arabic oud, but do not buy that one in your hand you can browse the
forum and see examples of these ouds on the home page there are links for some of the best oud makers explore, and don't rush in making a quick choice
you may regret, take your time and get as much advice as possible.
You are in good hands in this forum, get pepole involved they are pretty helpful overhere, good luck
all the best

His list has makers of both Arabic and Turkish style ouds ...
Good luck.

Great, I'll start going through the websites. If anyone has purchased an Arabic oud from any of these makers and have had a good experience, please PM
me and let me know as there are a lot to choose from! I want to get a good enough instrument that I won't want to upgrade in a short time.
